Muriel Elizabeth Bowser was born on August 2, 1972, in Washington DC. She is the eighth mayor of the District of Colombia. She got into the office with a Democratic Party ticket. Before she became the Mayor, she represented Ward 4 as a member of the council. Bowser succeeded Adrian Fenty after a special election in 2007. In 2008 she was re-elected as the mayor. In 2014 she defeated five candidates by 54.53% who contested against her for the mayor seat. Her being the mayor makes her the second woman to hold that position.

Elizabeth Bowser parents are Joe Bowser and Joan Bowser, in a family of six children she is the youngest. She grew up in North Michigan Park. She went to Elizabeth Seton High School where she graduated in 1990 and got a scholarship to Chatham College located in Pennsylvania, where she got a bachelor’s degree in history. Ms. Bowser went to American University of Public Affairs where she obtained her master’s in Public Policy. Ms. Bowser is a Catholic Christian.

Her political career begun in 2004 when she ran for the Advisory Neighborhood Commission. She ran for re-election in 2006 and won, in both accounts she was unopposed. In 2006 her predecessor Adrian Fenty, who was representing ward 4 as a member of council was elected mayor making his seat vacant. A special election was held to fill the seat where Bowser was elected. During the event Bowser was the only candidate who supported a proposed takeover plan of public school by Fenty, she argued that the school need change.

When Ms. Bowser was elected as Dc Mayor, some critics believed that she would favor some developers who were contributors to her campaign. Others felt she would ignore the needs of the people and would only follow Fenty wish. However, most of her supporters believe that she brings a hands-on approach to governance and policy-making in the District of Colombia. She gained a lot of support from voters due to her ambitious agenda which focused on quality neighborhoods rebuilding, an ethical government which embraces transparency schools transformation and the widening of business.

Some of her achievement as a council member, the population in Ward 4 has grown, the building of hundreds of housing units, there has been increased public spaces, and the quality of schools has improved. The rate of violent crimes has decreased, new businesses have sprouted and a lot of new stores established. The Washington Post Editorial board referred to her once as independent-minded, smart and hardworking they argued that she had presented herself as a good advocate for her ward and also in the education reforms.

Ms. Bowser is the chairperson of Economic Development’s council committee, her role is to oversight the district Economic development portfolio. She also oversees the budget of an excess of $1.6 billion. She developed the New Community Initiative for affordable housing program where she conducts oversight; she also passed a law which requires the executive agencies to submit the report on the New Community Initiative on their progress. Her policy on housing came as a measure to control and reduce the number of people who were homeless. These policies are working and she continues to impress her supporters.
